Groovin' good time at concert

GEORGE TOWN: AS promised, the rhythm got the audience grooving at a five-hour-long Conga -- East Meets West concert staged at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Dewan Budaya recently.

Organised by Jammin' Senzation Conservatory of Peforming Arts and Music and Dewan Budaya, the fundraising concert was for the benefit of three charitable organisations appealing for much needed funds.

A total of RM21,219 was raised from the event which will be presented to the three children charities, The Shan Children Home in Mount Erskine, the Children Protection Society in Scotland Road and the Shammah Home in Butterworth.

Jammin' Senzation principal, Jasmin Khor, said the conservatory has been raising funds for charities since 2008 and previous beneficiaries included Penang Down's Syndrome Association, the National Cancer Society Penang branch and St Nicholas Home for Visually Impaired.

"Besides providing students with music education, we at Jammin' Senzation have also been involved in numerous charitable events as we believe that serving the community is as important as educating," said Khor.
"Jammin' Senzation offers music education for all ages, even for babies as young as three months. "For this year's concert, we brought in international acts to complement our top local entertainers for a mixture of eastern and western music for a night of great music and fun."

International jazz singer Jasmine Chen from Shanghai whipped up a storm belting out Chinese folk songs and contemporary jazz numbers sung in Chinese, while violinist Carey Moorman provided a change in tempo playing his brand of music.

Local contemporary pop/jazz duo Mary Jackson and Charles Barnabas upped the mood with their bouncy tunes and the accomplished jazz outfit WVC Trio thrilled the audience with its usual polished performance.

Not to be outshone, the well-established Northern Jazz Ensemble kept the audience enthralled with its own jazzy show. Upcoming local acts were also given a chance to shine in the spotlight with cultural performances by local Punjabi percussion group the Penang Dhol Blasters, a teenage quartet of dancers the Four Graces, belly dancing from Dance99 and, last but not least, music students from Jammin' Senzation and Dewan Budaya playing a fusion of eastern and western music to round up a night of great music and live entertainment.
